Young Workers Caucus

Young workers, like all workers, want to be treated with fairness, dignity and respect!

In 2002 the PSAC BC Regional Council embarked on a journey to look at the needs of young workers in the region through the Solidarity Campaign for Young Workers. This involved contacting, educating and organizing young workers under thirty, regardless of their employment status. This goals of this campaign, which led to the creation of the Young Workers Caucus were to:

  • identify young workers' issues and rights in the workplace
  • build and strengthen the relationship and involvement of young workers with the PSAC
  • build understanding of our common issues as workers, regardless of age or employment status.

Get involved today! Contact the PSAC BC Regional Council Young Workers Coordinator YangE [at] psac-afpc [dot] com (subject: Young%20Workers%20Caucus) (Erica Yang) or PSAC Regional Rep urrutim [at] psac [dot] com (Monica Urrutia).

Erica Yang, BC Regional Council Young Workers Coordinator

Erica originally came from Taipei Taiwan about 14 years ago, and she has made Canada her home since. She is a full-time Citizen Service Officer with the Service Canada Multilingual Extension Services based at New Westminster. Her union activism started when she was studying at UBC and working as an undergraduate teaching assistant for the UBC Mathematics Department.  The TA strike hit the campus.  She took on being one of the union reps for the math department, and she, too, walked the picketlne in the cold Vancouver winter weather.

Erica became active with PSAC in 2008. Since then, she has participated at different levels, including working for PSAC as the BC Youth Outreach Worker in 2010. In past and most recent years she has volunteered with: The Heart&Stroke Fundation BC&Yukon, Canadian Mental Health Association, and Landmark Education in Vancouver. Her friends often see Erica as a dreamer, an idealist, and a person crazy enough to actually pursue those dreams.  Most days she shares that she is really that unreasonable.  Please feel welcome to e-mail her with your youth related queries or input at yangp [at] psac-afpc [dot] com. She would love to hear from you, especially if you can think out side of the box.

They sign up new members, they organize picket lines and demonstrations, they conduct high school classes in labour rights and workplace safety, and they cook meals for fundraising events to send young workers on solidarity trips to Cuba, South Africa and Central America. One even came back from a vacation in Las Vegas with a tattoo declaring their commitment to the cause. (You'll find out where in a minute.)
