Human Rights

The PSAC BC Region has three Human Rights Committees who meet regularly to in person and via conference call to discuss issues and plan events relating to PSAC's Aboriginal, PWD, GLBT, and Racially Visible caucus members.

The BC Region also has four Regional Council members who represent equity-seeking groups. They are responsible for PSAC members within their constituencies and speak for them at the Council, they seek to promote the activism of PSAC members within these constituencies, and they ensure and promote representation for their constituencies throughout our Union.

On July 8th, an enthusiastic and colourful group of PSAC members in Victoria celebrated Pride and raised awareness about the discriminatory one year ban on blood donation by gay and trans people. On National Indigenous Peoples Day, June 21, PSAC is distributing Red Dress Pins to raise awareness on the national issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada, and to urge the government to bolster the efforts of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG).

Members of the Vancouver Island Human Rights Committee, the North Vancouver Island Area Council, REVP Jamey Mills, and Alternate REVP Todd Smith gathered in Nanaimo on June 10 to walk in the Nanaimo Pride Parade. Participants came together to celebrate Pride, Diversity and Inclusion, and handed out postcards to bring awareness to the Gay and Trans blood ban in Canada.

In 1966, the United Nations proclaimed March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This year, PSAC calls on the Liberal government to address the systemic causes of racism and racial discrimination.

Jill MacNeill and Jenny Macleod, two indigenous PSAC activists in BC have recently taken up new positions. Jill was appointed to PSAC’s National Aboriginal People’s Circle as the Female Representative for BC and Jenny Macleod has become the new PSAC BC Regional Council Coordinator for Aboriginal members.
