After spending some days looking at your input and going through your collective agreement, your bargaining team put together a full package of proposals to renew your collective agreement. And we then sat down with the employer to begin negotiations. We spent three days with them to start the process of getting you a better agreement.

PSAC/UTE Bargaining Team continues push for leave improvements, raises issues concerning health and safety and union communication in the workplace.

This past week (January 28-31) our Bargaining Team spent four days in talks with CRA.  The parties spent the week in negotiations over a number of issues, including leave provisions, access to the collective agreement and union communication in the workplace.

Black History Month recognizes the contributions and achievements of Black people in Canada.

Jean Augustine, the first Black woman elected to Parliament proposed recognizing February as Black History Month and in December 1995, Parliament unanimously adoped her motion.

People of African descent were first brought to Canada as slaves. Slavery existed in Canada from 1628 until it was abolished in Upper Canada in 1793 and throughout the entire British empire in 1833.

PSAC National President Robyn Benson appeared before the Standing Committee on the Status of Women Jan. 29 on sexual harassment in the federal public service. She told the committee the difficult and protracted complaint process may keep victims from filing complaints. Benson asked for improvements in the complaint process and for the government to reaffirm its commitment to eliminating sexual harassment and other forms of discrimination and violence against women, and for a national action plan on violence against women

The federal government is closing nine Veterans Affairs Canada district offices across the country, leaving veterans without access to in-person services, including counselling, in cities across Canada.

Offices will close on February 28, 2014, bringing the number of job cuts at Veterans Affairs to 400 since last April. The cities affected are Sydney, Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; Corner Brook, Newfoundland; Windsor and Thunder Bay, Ontario; Brandon, Manitoba; Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and Prince George and Kelowna in British Columbia.

We have had many inquiries from PSAC members about the new Family Day holiday in BC, which is coming up in February. Federal public sector collective agreements provide for 11 designated paid holidays, including a day in the opinion of the employer to be a provincial or civic holiday. Currently the civic holiday recognized by federal government employers is the first Monday in August. This means that federal public sector workers in BC will not be granted Family Day here in BC.
