Every May 1, workers around the world mark May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, to honour the generations of workers who organized, took risks, and stood together so that future workers could have fair wages, safe workplaces, shorter hours, and dignity on the job.
Here in British Columbia, that legacy continues in every workplace where members speak up, support one another, and demand fairness.
Across our region, PSAC BC members are still facing rising costs, housing pressures, understaffing, unsafe workplaces, and growing attacks on remote work flexibility and job security. Too many employers still see us as a cost to cut instead of the people who keep our borders secure, our food safe, our communities connected, our parks protected, and our services running. When these essential jobs are eliminated, communities lose the services they depend on.
We reject that thinking. Workers are not disposable and public services are not luxuries. That’s why PSAC BC continues to organize, bargain, and mobilize for better wages, stronger protections, and inclusive workplaces.
This May Day, we encourage every member to take pride in what workers have won, and to recommit to the work ahead. Talk with your coworkers, get involved in your Local, support workers in struggle, and use your voice.
Because workers built this province and together, and we’ll shape what comes next.
In solidarity,
Jamey Mills
Regional Executive Vice-President
