Happy upcoming National Indigenous Peoples’ Day! On June 21, we celebrate the rich cultures, histories, languages, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples across Canada.
Indigenous Peoples have stewarded these lands from coast to coast to coast since time immemorial and continue to shape communities, workplaces, and movements today. Here in BC, we organize and build solidarity on the traditional, unceded, ancestral territories of 202 First Nations and 38 Métis Chartered Communities. Each of these Nations and Homelands contribute distinct cultures, languages, and traditions that make up the vibrant tapestry of British Columbia.
Meaningful Reconciliation
National Indigenous Peoples Day (NIPD) is also an opportunity and reminder to reflect on, learn, and unlearn the impacts of colonialism that continue today. Meaningful reconciliation requires truth, accountability, and action. As union activists, PSAC BC and PSAC members have an important role to play in advancing Indigenous rights, confronting systemic barriers, and creating equitable workplaces.
PSAC’s self-paced online course, Walking in Our Truth Together, is one way to take action and deepen your understanding of Indigenous histories, rights, and realities. Developed in collaboration with Canadian Geographic, Walking in Our Truth Together explores treaties, Indigenous law, residential schools, MMIWG, and more.
Together, we can continue walking in truth, building stronger relationships, and taking action toward a future rooted in respect, justice, and solidarity.
In solidarity,
Darien Gomez, PSAC BC Indigenous Peoples Coordinator
