Ryan Simmonds is one of three BC-based SV Bargaining Team members. As a third-generation activist, Ryan is committed to representing the SV group throughout this bargaining round. His priorities include ensuring wages keep pace with the rising cost of living and securing fair, equitable working conditions that support a better work-life balance for all members.
PSAC BC recently connected with Ryan to hear about his experiences on the Bargaining Team and what keeps him motivated.
Interview with Ryan Simmonds
Why did you become a bargaining team member?
I have been active for 15 years, UNDE Local 21013 Vice-president and President. I watched closely where I thought changes could really make a difference and for me it was at the Bargaining Table. We all deserve better wages and benefits…we just want to keep up. With CLC Collective Bargaining Training and the support of our union, here I am. We federal employees are being left behind. It’s time to change this and I wanted to be on the front line fighting for it.
What’s the most rewarding part of being on the Bargaining Team?
The most rewarding part of being on the Bargaining Team is seeing firsthand how members across Canada support us — seeing what dedication it takes, understanding how hard this really is, hanging in there for change. Visible solidarity, such as teh Black Shirt Days, show me firsthand why I do this. This SV team is very close, family away from home. You really get to know your team and it’s truly amazing how we support each other.
What has surprised you most about bargaining?
What surprised me about bargaining was how much Treasury Board really dislikes its employees. I’m surprised by how awful humans can really be to each other and the lack of respect being a $ sign to them, as if we are literally taking money out of their pockets.
What keeps you motivated?
So many things. Having people that believe in me keeps me motivated. Meeting them in their home towns, listening to their frustrations trying to make a living. How hard it is for everyone, but not giving up keeps me motivated. The involvement of my team and not wanting to give up keeps me motivated. Doing the best for my family keeps me motivated.
How does member support affect you at the table?
Member support keeps me from not giving up, it’s the fuel I use to push forward in getting the best Collective Agreement possible. It’s knowing members do believe we are doing the absolute best we can before next level. Something for everyone to better their day-to-day lives.

Ryan works for the Department of National Defence as a bosun on a large tractor tugboat. As bosun, he supervises the deck crew, coordinates maintenance and repairs, and ensures safe mooring and anchoring operations. He began his career on tugs as a chef, later moving into the engine room as an oiler before becoming a bosun. In this role, he helps ensure the tugboat and its crew are ready to support Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) operations when required.
Ryan is a third-generation activist. His first experience at conventions and conferences and other union activities fueled his own involvement, which pushed him to run for local president.
