Domestic Violence at Work: PSAC Training for Representatives (DVW) (2.5 Days, in person) – Victoria

Location: PSAC Victoria Regional Office (202 – 503 Park Place, Victoria, BC)

Tentative Hours of Session (to be confirmed):

• Saturday, Oct. 31: Lunch provided; Session from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM
• Sunday, Nov. 1: 9 AM to 5 PM
• Monday, Nov. 2: 9 AM to 2:30 PM

Course Overview:

Eliminating and advocating to end violence against women has been a longstanding priority for PSAC members. Several resolutions on this issue have been adopted throughout the years. At the 2015 PSAC National Triennial Convention, members adopted a resolution to develop a domestic violence education training program. This course is a result of the action of members to bring this issue forward as a workplace and union issue. 

If you are willing to take on advocacy and referral for members in the workplace who are experiencing domestic violence, we invite you to apply for this course. Participants will receive information and training on how to deliver short awareness presentations to other members on the topic of domestic violence in the workplace. There will be support worker(s) available throughout the course. 

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

1. Explain why domestic violence is a workplace issue and what the union can do to support members who experience domestic violence; 
2. Identify the role and responsibilities of the parties with regards to supporting someone in the workplace who experiences domestic violence; 
3. Recognize the signs, in the workplace, that someone might be experiencing domestic violence; 
4. Support and refer members who experience domestic violence; and 
5. Deliver a short awareness presentation to members, on domestic violence in the workplace.

Course Details:

This 2.5 day course will be held at the PSAC Victoria Regional Office. The PSAC will provide travel, accommodation, meal and incidental allowances, loss of salary reimbursement or Leave With Pay coverage, and reimbursement of family care costs in accordance with the PSAC Travel and Family Care Policies

Please Note: If a participant chooses not to stay at the hotel for an in-residence course (and instead commutes daily from home), they must request this on their application or at time of confirmation of attendance. The participant would then not be considered in travel status, and they will only be compensated NJC Rates for kilometers and lunch and actual cost of parking. The participant would still be required to attend all evening activities of the in-residence course.  

For Participants on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland, you will travel to the PSAC Victoria Regional Office the morning of Saturday, October 31, arriving between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. and hotel accommodations will be provided for you Saturday and Sunday evenings.  

For Participants in East Fraser Valley, North and Southern Interior, you will travel to the Victoria Area on Friday, October 30. Hotel accommodations will be provided for you Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (if applicable).  

Prerequisites:

• Applicants must have a minimum of Talking Union Basics or Our Communities, Our Union, Our Rights: An introduction to the PSAC for Indigenous Members
• This course is for PSAC union representatives (stewards, Local/Branch officers, human rights advocates, etc.) who:
  • Have experience and training on representing members in the workplace;
  • Have community or union work experience supporting survivors of domestic violence or advocating against domestic violence and/or gender-based violence;
  • Are willing to take on advocacy and referral for members in the workplace who experience domestic violence.
