December 6 Vigil – National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
Wednesday, December 6
5:00 PM -
BC Legislature, 501 Belleville St., Victoria
This year the PSAC BC Vancouver Island Regional Women’s Committee invites you to join the December 6 vigil at the BC Legislature at 5 PM. This event will unite folks from across Vancouver Island to commemorate the women lost, and honour the actions so many take everyday to combat gender based violence in our community.
We also invite you to visit the commemorative plaque installed and maintained by the Vancouver Island Regional Women’s Committee at 3:30 PM on December 6 — or on your own time — to read the names, lay a flower, and have a moment of silence. The Commemorative plaque is permanently installed at Holland Point Park on Dallas Road in Victoria.
This plaque is a permanent reminder of the tragic events of 1989 of what became known as the Montreal Massacre, when 14 STEM women at the University Polytechnique were killed by a gunmen who yelled: “I hate feminists.” One of the former VIRWC committees chairs, Virginia Vaillancourt, was instrumental in organizing and coordinating the installation of this plaque on the 25th anniversary of the Day of Remembrance.
