The National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, recognized on September 30 each year, honours the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.
To mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the East Fraser Valley Area Council Area Council, along with PSAC BC Indigenous Peoples Coordinator Alan Otrosina and the PSAC BC Mainland Human Right Committee, are hosting a private tour of St Mary’s (former) Residential School in Mission on Wednesday, September 18.
Tour registrants will gather in the chapel at the site and hear the history of the school, the teachers and children who attended. The group will then be led through the building, including girls and boys dormitories. The tour will take approximately 90 minutes and will be guided by Naxaxalhts’i, Albert (Sonny) McHalsie. Naxaxalhts`i is currently the Cultural Advisor and Stó:lō Historian for the Stó:lō Research and Resource Management Centre.
Spaces are limited and are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please register below to reserve your spot. PSAC BC members are able to bring family or friends on the tour with this. Please advise if you will be bringing any guests with you when you complete your registration form.
Please note – For those with mobility challenges, please note that, unfortunately, St. Mary’s Residential School in not an accessible site.
