Labour Day is more than a celebration; it’s a reminder of what workers can achieve when we stand together. For more than a century, Labour Day has honoured the workers who organized, stood shoulder to shoulder, and fought for the rights many of us rely on today. As we gather across BC to celebrate, let’s remember that those victories weren’t handed to us. They were won through solidarity and protecting them will require that same collective resolve.
The struggle for workers’ rights is far from over.
British Columbians continue to face social, economic, and environmental challenges that affect our livelihoods, communities, and public services. Rising costs, job uncertainty, unpredictable tariffs, and global instability are putting pressure on working families. At the same time, devastating wildfires continue to threaten communities, force evacuations, and destroy homes, wildlife habitats, and irreplaceable cultural artifacts.
At times like these, public service workers are there supporting emergency response, protecting our borders, inspecting our food, safeguarding our environment, and ensuring people can access the services they depend on. But these services are at risk.
At a time when British Columbians need reliable public services more than ever, governments should be investing in the workers who deliver them. Instead, thousands of PSAC members have received workforce adjustment notices. When public service jobs are cut, working families feel the impact. Whether it’s longer waits, reduced services, or increased pressure on remaining workers, cuts weaken communities, not just workplaces.
Workers throughout British Columbia are facing many of the same challenges. As we celebrate this Labour Day, I’m reminded that solidarity is one of our greatest weapons in the face of uncertainty. When thousands of PSAC BC members stand shoulder to shoulder with workers in every corner of the province, we build the power to push back, demand fairness, and create lasting change for everyone.
This Labour Day, make a commitment to get involved, engaged, and active in our union and the broader labour movement. Talk to your co-workers, build awareness, and keep momentum going.
