Support the PSAC Vancouver Regional Women’s Committee FHaB (Feminine Hygiene and Basics bag) Campaign

Accessing feminine hygiene products is challenging for low income and homeless women. Food, shelter, and clothing take precedence, leaving women with few options to deal with their periods with dignity. As a result, women often have to resort to stealing feminine hygiene products, or utilizing socks or toilet paper in lieu of sanitary pads or tampons, which leaves them more susceptible to infection.

Although there have been strides in British Columbia through the provincial government providing free feminine hygiene products in schools, and the United Way’s Period Promise, more help is always needed.

This year the Vancouver Regional Women’s Committee for Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) is pleased to announce the launch of their FHaB Campaign to help disadvantaged women.

Contents

The foundation of the FHaB contents would be sanitary pads and tampons. Additional items can include, but are not limited to, an assortment of the following:

Panty liners Feminine hygiene wipes Deodorant
Lip balm Lotion Shampoo
Conditioner Soap Hand sanitizer
Toothbrushes Toothpaste Dental floss

The Bags

The actual bags will be new or gently used makeup or toiletry bags. Other options can include knitted, crocheted, or sewn drawstring bags. Other new bags of similar sizes, such as large pencil cases can also be used.

How can you participate?

  • With permission, start a collection box in your workplace.
  • Make bags for the campaign. The ideal size for any sewn, knit or crocheted bags is approximately 6” x 8”, with the drawstring along the short edge.
  • Collect money to donate to the campaign. All funds collected will be used to purchase items to include in the bags. Please make cheques payable to the PSAC Vancouver Regional Women’s Committee.

Recipients

FHAB Campaign will be donating this winter to the Surrey location of Lookout Housing and Health Society. Gateway Shelter and Front Room are the hub for the organization in Surrey. Other services the organization provides is their community outreach program, which assists individuals who are often chronically homeless and who experience repeated emergency life crises.
