Union Requests Minister Stop “Flawed” Decision to Remove Lighthouse Keepers at Carmanah Point and Pachena Point, cites increased risk to public

The Union of Canadian Transportation Employees (UCTE) plans to end staffing at Carmanah Point and Pachena Point lighthouses in British Columbia. UCTE claims that the Canadian Coast Guard’s (CCG) decision is based on flawed and outdated reports, which will increase risks to mariners, Indigenous harvesters, and the public. The CCG plans to replace lighthouse keepers with solar power and automated technologies, which UCTE argues are unreliable, especially in foggy conditions. More information can be found in the below letter sent to Member of Parliament Diane Lebouthillier and on the UCTE Website.
