This International Youth Day, PSAC BC recommits to creating space for young workers to lead, organize, and shape the future of our union.
As a young worker in union leadership, I’ve seen firsthand that our generation isn’t just the future of the labour movement, we’re shaping it right now. Across British Columbia, young members are organizing workplaces, leading campaigns, serving on committees, and standing up for fairness on the job. Our ideas, experiences, and leadership are essential to building a stronger union.
It’s also important to note thatevery generation strengthens the labour movement in new ways. Today’s workplace rights were won by workers who organized before us. Victories such as paid maternity leave, pay equity corrections, and rights for same-sex couples and disabled members. As young workers, we not only inherit these victories, but continue the essential work to maintain, improve, and build on them.
I’ve heard young members express frustrations, and I’ve felt them too. Bureaucracy, outdated mindsets, inequitable power distribution, just to name a few. It can feel like our voices go unheard or that our participation doesn’t make a difference. But the truth is we have power. When we come together and raise our voices, change follows.
Here are a few ways we can make change together:
Join a young workers committee
PSAC BC was the first region to form geographically based committees, beginning with Vancouver Island, and soon after Mainland and Haida Gwaii. Young Workers Committees (YWC) identify issues of concern to young PSAC members and to develop action plans to address priority concerns. Participate in or plan mobilization campaigns
PSAC BC is always looking for ways to mobilize members, and greater participation means greater impact. Subscribe to the PSAC BC newsletter to make sure you hear about the latest campaigns, such as the upcoming August Day of Solidarity where members across the country wear black to send a poignant message to the employer. Attend a PSAC event near you (or better yet, plan one with your YWC!)
Attending a PSAC BC event or union meeting is one of the best ways to connect with fellow members, grow your union network, and turn ideas into action. Young Workers Committees host regular general meetings and have also planned BBQs, guerilla gardening events, Young Worker focused info sessions, and more. Have an idea for an event? Take a PSAC course
Whether you’re new to the union or looking to build on your skills, PSAC offers a wide range of courses on topics like union fundamentals, workforce adjustment, leadership training, human rights, and political action. Education is one of the best ways to build confidence, develop new skills, and prepare for future leadership opportunities. Check out upcoming courses and find one that interests you.
Volunteer with your Component or Local
Getting involved doesn’t always mean taking on a formal leadership role. Small contributions — like keeping your union bulletin board up to date, helping organize meetings or events, welcoming new members, or sharing information with coworkers — can make a big difference. Reach out to your Local or Component to find out how you can lend a hand and help keep members informed and connected.
Become a union leader
Ready to take the next step? Consider running for a position on your Local executive, serving as a steward, or joining a committee. Union leaders play a vital role in advocating for members, organizing workplaces, and helping shape the future of our union. You don’t need years of experience to get started, just a willingness to learn, listen, and stand up for your fellow members.
