Victory for Commissionaires Union: All Commissionaires on Vancouver Island and in the Yukon become union members upon being hired

PSAC BC and the Commissionaires Union recently won an arbitrated decision regarding a complaint brought against the employer, The Commissionaires Victoria, The Islands and Yukon Division.

The arbitrator found that the “A” List or “spares list” – the initial placement for all new hires – is a certified bargaining unit and employees on the “A” List are union members, even if the employer assigns them to a non-union worksite.

The decision contained in part the following orders, which the employer must comply with immediately.

  • Newly hired Commissionaires as of the date of hire, without geographic limitation, are assigned to the occupational group known as the “A” List;
  • The employer must immediately, and without geographic limitation at the time of hire, provide a list of newly hired Commissionaires and confirm to the union that they have been assigned to the occupational group known as the “A” List;

This award is an important organizing victory for Commissionaires which will be built on in the next round of bargaining.

Approximately 400 members of PSAC Local 20500 work as Commissionaires on Vancouver Island and in Whitehorse, providing high-quality security services to the federal government as well as the private sector.
